Emotionally Focused Couples therapy is form of couples therapy that is grounded in the EFT framework and has shown to be highly effective in research studies. It can be used in couples facing a wide range of relationship challenges. It’s main goals are to draw awareness to important emotional responses, to foster the creation of a secure bond between partners, and to help to initiate new cycles of interaction between partners that build a strong bond in the relationship.
Emotionally focused couples therapy is generally a short-term (8-20 sessions) approach. It is a collaborative approach that respects each partner involved and helps them implement new strategies (“change strategies”) and interventions to use outside of the session.
Through focusing on emotions, reactions, interactions, and behaviors couples learn to identify their individual roles and the impact they have on the relationship. Each participant is encouraged to express their experiences and emotions in the safety of the session. By witnessing the release of feelings and anxieties of one partner, the other is able to gain new insight into not only their own, but also the other’s experience.
